Emotional Literacy

Emotions and movement are inextricably linked. Move your body, stuff happens. We also come to our mats with a whole constellation of experiences. We need to understand how to foster spaces that support a healthy process of moving and integrating what arises through our yoga into fuel for our honest lives.

I believe that psychologically and emotionally literate yogis are the future of modern yoga.

This 9-month online course picks up where teacher training left off, to delve into the fertile world of the human psyche and how it intersects with the powerful practice of yoga. This accessible but deep exploration draws on my graduate studies and ongoing professional practice in somatic (body-based) psychology to distill the most useful and important information specifically for yoga teachers.

  • Learn how to skillfully work with what yoga stirs up inside

  • Deepen your practice through complimentary somatic techniques.

  • Become a more impactful teacher by knowing your patterns clearly.

Course Description:

What’s happening in your body right now?

What sensations do you notice?

What emotions are present?

For many people, even yoga students, questions like these can be quite challenging to answer. Our culture is mostly illiterate in somatic and emotional vocabulary. By that, I mean the way we can sense and describe what is happening in our body and the way we can identify and share what we feeling. Many of us are disconnected from our felt experience of being alive in a body. Many of us were taught that we either feel to much or too little. Many of us have little practice truly being with who we are as emotional and sensual beings. And this impacts our abilities to have meaningful relationships, forge healthy communities, be in direct relationship with our our Soul’s unique mission, and find resiliency throughout life.

Yoga has become a leading way of shifting this paradigm. Many people come to yoga to find a more desirable relationship with their body, or to ease emotional turmoil. Still many come initially for the physical practice and find there is way more than they expected! A whole world of sensory experience and emotionality live within these precious bodies of ours. And some people come and get injured, jaded or abused along the way. Reconciling these traumas must be part of our work on the path of healthy yoga practice.

It seems to me, that despite a sincere desire for yoga to help us heal and really live fully as feeling beings, most yoga classes simply cannot address the depth of what is arising for any given student. There are just so many pitfalls and potholes on the path. In fact, I find many of us as practitioners were never taught exactly how to be with what the yoga practice stirs up inside—how to tolerate ourselves in a loving way, and how to teach our students to do the same.

Is this class for me?

If you’ve found your way here, you are already deeply interested in these more nuanced aspects or practice and teaching. this course is for you if…

  • You are curious about how to teach the under-the-surface components of yoga. You can feel their inklings and tugs. And you are ready to make it more overt.

  • You are feeling the pull to offer classes that are more trauma-aware and resiliency based.

  • You are finding that in these turbulent times more people are turning to you and to yoga practice for solace.

  • You have had a particularly profound experience through yoga that you want to integrate more fully and use as a platform for teaching.

  • You are already seeing the blind-spots within our studies and trainings in yoga that limit our ability to re-member our inherent somatic and emotional intelligence.

If so, this immersion of Emotional Literacy is for You.

What makes this training so special?

In yoga teacher trainings, the focus is on learning the topic of yoga at hand. Meaning we focus on the teachings of yoga, ayurveda, biomechanics and philosophy. The time constraints of these trainings leaves less time for exploring the western psyche and how the teachings of yoga actually impact us.

Teachings skills are focused on teaching the poses and less on how to teach the people inside the poses.

Let me remind you that proficiency in asana instruction and inspirational talks are not the only skills of effective yoga teachers. Modern times call for teachers that are deeply embodied, holistic, and emotionally literate.

These are skills that can be learned. It is not magic, I promise. The first step is to become fully awake to your internal landscape. Honing your emotional intelligence from the inside. Tracking your sensations and feeling your feelings. Understanding what triggers you and why. Knowing why you repeat patterns of relationship and catching them before they run the show.

This class will show you how.

Emotional Literacy for Yogis is a web-based immersive course designed to offer you the support and tools you desire to blossom into a deeply engaged practitioner. We go to the places most teacher trainings can’t. We go into the field beyond asana, into the somatic field, into the relational field, to steady your practices in greater awareness, and benefit your skillful teaching.

You are invited to reclaim your inherent wisdom through this rich education in somatic, emotional, psychological, social and soul-listening literacy.

This immersion develops your inner backbone, emotional bandwidth, psychological and conceptual understanding of human growth and development, as well as deeply satisfying interpersonal skills.
