Course Description:

In Western culture we are largely illiterate in our somatic and emotional vocabulary. Though yoga is now one of the leading modes of rekindling our emotional literacy, many classes focus solely on the outer form of poses, instead of the nuanced aspects that live within the poses. Aspects like sensory awareness and tracking, emotional awareness and articulation, embodiment and presence while practicing, and our ability to relate honestly to ourselves and each other.

If you’ve found your way here, you are already deeply interested in these areas of practice. You might even be just beginning this journey into the underbelly of your practice. Hallelujah! And welcome home. Thank you. I see you.

These are the areas that acknowledge the hidden aspects of ourselves, our human complexity and our development in relationship to yoga.

  • You are curious about how to teach these under-the-surface components of yoga. You can feel their inklings and tugs. And you are ready to make it more overt.

  • You are feeling the pull to offer classes that are more trauma-aware and resiliency based.

  • You are finding that in these turbulent times more people are turning to you and to yoga practice for solace.

  • You have had a particularly profound experience through yoga that you want to integrate more fully and use as a platform for teaching.

  • You are already seeing the blind-spots within our studies and trainings in yoga that limit our ability to re-member our inherent somatic and emotional intelligence.

In teacher-trainings the focus is on learning the topic of yoga at hand. Meaning we focus on the teachings of yoga, ayurveda, biomechanics and philosophy. The time constraints of these trainings leaves less time for exploring the western psyche and how these teachings of yoga actually impact us. The teachings skills are focused on the pose and less on how to approach the people inside the pose. Many yoga teachers are not initially taught how to support a rich somatic processing space, even though yoga is inherently a somatic practice. Basically, when you move your body, stuff happens. And we come to our mats with a whole constellation of experiences. Emotions and movement are inextricably linked.

Proficiency in asana instruction and inspirational talks are not the only skills of effective yoga teachers. Modern times call for teachers that are deeply embodied, holistic, and emotionally literate.

But before you can teach from that space, you need to become fully awake to your internal landscape. When you do, your capacity to support those around you increases dramatically and teaching becomes more effortless, efficient, inspired and integrated.

These skill sets will lead you into deeper relationship with yourself, and therefore your teachings and the community you serve. Emotional Literacy for Yogis is a web-based immersive course designed to offer you the support and tools you desire to blossom into a deeply engaged practitioner. We go to the places most teacher trainings can’t. We go into the field beyond asana, into the somatic field, into the relational field, to deepen your already steady practice, and benefit your skillful teaching.

You are invited to reclaim your inherent wisdom through this rich education in somatic, emotional, psychological, social and soul-listening literacy. This immersion develops your inner backbone, emotional bandwidth, psychological and conceptual understanding of human growth and development, as well as deeply satisfying interpersonal skills.
